Ben Reed: How often should a small group meet?

Ben Reed: How often should a small group meet?

What are the ideal frequencies for small groups to gather together? Every week? Every other week? Monthly?

In the video below Blake Atwood and our friends at Faith Village took some time to ask this question to Ben Reed, a Small Groups Pastor and member of our SGC Forum community.  Ben also shares strategies for what groups can do during certain seasons of the year where meeting regularly might not be practical.

What are your thoughts?

  1. Nice video! I agree with Ben that meeting weekly is ideal, but at least every other week at a minimum. Smile

  2. Today I blogged about meeting frequency: weekly, biweekly, or something else? My experience and the research of Jim Egli both show that the healthiest, most effective, best growing groups meet weekly (and also touch base and do life together between meetings). Here’s my post on it today: http://ow.ly/u1e7T

What do the rest of you think? Can you really raise commitment to Christ, to the group, and to mutual discipleship by lowering the commitment and meeting less often?

  3. And, by the way, hope you have a great birthday today, Ben Reed!

    Smile

I think weekly is best for connection and building community. When I came to my church some groups met every other week and some met monthly.

My goal has been to bring most of them to every other week and slowly nudge towards every week.

Right now, I’ve got the majority of groups at every other week, so we’re making progress.

For example, we’re doing some 4 week (weekly) small groups for the Son of God movie/sermon series so this will be a good nudge towards that frequency. In the Fall I’m hoping to do a 6 week campaign with weekly groups which will be more than just a nudge towards that.

    Oh yeah, and HAPPY BIRTHDAY @Ben Reed ! You’re 24th, right? :)

    Good stuff, Mike!

I agree with you, Andrew. Let’s set the ideal, and keep moving people towards it.

Thanks for the birthday wishes, fellas. I WISH I was only 24. Kiss
